대한상사의 견본실에서 골덴 원단 자투리 견본을 구경하던 Mr. Brown은 What's the yardage price on this sample? (이 견본을 기준으로 하면 야드당 단가는 얼마나 될까요?) 처럼 가격에 대하여 문의한다. 수나 양, 값 등을 물을 때는 how much나 how many가 먼저 생각나기 마련이지만, 주어가 the price(가격), chances(가능성), the population(인구) 등이 될 때 우리말 '얼마'는 보통 what으로 표현된다. What's the price per yard? (야드당 가격은 얼마입니까?) What are the chances? (가능성은 어느 정도입니까?) What's the population of Seoul? (서울의 인구는 얼마입니까?) How much를 써서 가격을 물을 때는 반드시 it을 사용하여 다음과 같이 표현해야 한다. How much is it for one yard [per yard]? (1야드의 가격은 얼마입니까?) 그러나 실전에서는 간단히 How much a yard?(1야드에 얼마지요?) 처럼 묻는 경우가 많다.
