PYEONGTAEK, Gyeonggi - At 69, Cheon Chang-suk lives alone in a tiny cell with moss-covered walls. In the eyes of the Korean government, Cheon is one of many underprivileged citizens who receive monthly welfare aid worth 380,000 won ($271), the minimum cost of living that people with no income get from the state. *underprivileged : (일반인보다) 권리가 적은, 혜택받지 못한 *welfare : 복지, 번영, 행복 정부에서 볼 때 전씨는 아무런 수입이 없는 사람이 사는데 필요한 월 최저 생계비 38만원을 보조받는 빈곤층의 한 명일 것이다. But Cheon says the Korean government owes her more because her life was irrevocably turned upside down by the turbulence of modern Korean history. *irrevocable : 되부를 수 없는, 취소할 수 없는 *turbulence : 휘몰아침, 사나움, 소동 하지만 대한민국 정부는 그녀에게 그 이상의 빚을 지고 있다고 전씨는 말한다. 한국 현대사의 소용돌이 속에서 그녀의 인생이 완전히 뒤바뀌어 버렸기 때문이다. During the chaotic and impoverished months following the cessation of hostilities of the Korean War (1950-1953), Cheon began working as a yangbuin, a term coined by locals for Korean bargirls and sex workers at major American camptowns, or gijichon in Korean. *impoverished : 가난하게된, 힘을 잃은, 빈약한 *cessation : 중지, 중단 *coin : (새로움 말을)만들다, 주조하다, 동전 한국전쟁이 끝나고 가난하고 혼란스럽던 시절, 전씨는’양부인’으로 일하기 시작했다. 양부인은 미군 부대 주변 도시, 이른바 기지촌이라 불리는 곳에서 미군을 상대하는 술집 종업원이자 매춘부로 일하던 여성을 일컫는 말이다. Gijichon sprang up across Korea around 1945 when U.S. troops arrived here to begin their post-World War II occupation. The primary function of these brothels was to provide sexual services for U.S. soldiers in a controllable, confined area, a move seen to also protect local women from the American military men. *brothel : 매음굴 *confine : 제한하다, 가두다 1945년 2차 세계대전이 끝난 후 미군이 한반도에 주둔하면서 전국 각지에 기지촌이 생겨났다. 이 집창촌의 기본적인 역할은 미군에게 통제가능하고 제한된 지역에서 성적(性的)서비스를 제공하기 위한 것으로 미군으로 부터 한국 여성을 보호한다는 의미도 있었다. The camptown economy peaked in Korea during the 1960s when the country was in desperate need of foreign currency to rebuild its war-torn economy. 전쟁으로 경제가 거덜난 한국이 재건을 위한 외화확보에 필사적이던 1960년대에 기지촌 경제는 정점에 달했다. Camptown prostitution and related businesses on the Korean Peninsula contributed to nearly 25 percent of the Korean GNP, according to Katharine Moon, a professor of political science at Wellesley College, in a 2002 study. *prostitution : 매춘,매음 웨슬리 대학 정치학과 캐서린 문 교수의 2002년 연구에 따르면 당시 기지촌의 매춘과 관련 산업은 국민총생산의 거의 25%를 차지했다.
