DEAR ABBY: My husband and I were invited to a dinner party at which the hostess seated my husband at the main table next to her. She seated me at a far table in the corner, with my back to the dinner guests.

Fortunately, I made easy conversation and had a nice time, but I don't feel like accepting any of her invitations in the future. My husband scarcely noticed and wonders why I might not *care to be invited again. May I know your thoughts on how to handle this?

By seating you in “Siberia,” the hostess demonstrated not only a breach of etiquette, but also how little she *cared about your feelings. Care: 쉬운 단어일 수록 중요합니다. 오늘은 care라는 단어에 대해서 알아보도록 해요. 그 후에 문장에 나온 care to, care about도 공부해 봅시다.

 

care의 기본 의미는 ~에 대해 마음을 쓰는 것입니다. ~에 대해 생각하고, 염려하고, 걱정하고... concern과 비슷한 의미라고 할까... 그래서, "we don't care about it"하면, "우리는 그런 것 상관 안 해"라는 뜻이지요.

 

"North Korea said yesterday that it does not care about the United States` move to impose additional sanctions against Pyongyang."(북한은 미국이 추가 경제 제제를 취하려는 움직임에 대해서 전혀 개의치 않는다고 어제 말했다.) 

 

반대로, "I care a lot about you"하면 "나 네 걱정 많이 해, 또는 나 너에 대한 생각을 많이 해"라는 뜻입니다. 밥을 잘 먹고 다니는 지, 잘 지내는지... 관심을 갖고 신경을 쓴다는 얘깁니다. 참 따뜻한 단어지요. 좋아하는 사람에게 무난하게 사용할 수 있는 말입니다. "I care a lot about you" 

 

"Most Koreans are heavy tippers and care so much about their attire, cars, or houses"(대부분의 한국인들은 팁도 많이 주고, 옷, 차, 집에 신경을 많이 쓰는 사람들이에요.)

 

신경을 쓰고 관심을 갖고 하니까... 명사로는 '돌봄'의 의미가 있습니다. 이런 이유로 'take care of' 혹은 'care for' 하면 '~을 돌보다'라는 뜻이 되지요. "We need to take care of the environment"(우리는 환경을 보살펴야 한다.)  

 

care to는 약간 다른 의미로 'like to'와 비슷합니다. ~하고 싶다, ~하기를 원한다, 라는 뜻입니다. 따라서 위의 문장처럼 'I don't care to be invited again'하면, '다시는 초대받지 않았으면 좋겠다'라는 뜻이 됩니다.

 

 

get the message: =understand(이해하다) 정도의 의미로 생각하시면 됩니다.  

 

"I couldn't get the message"(나는 무슨 말인 지 통 이해할 수가 없었다)

당연히, 명사로는 파기, 위반 등으로 쓰이겠지요.

그 의원은 비밀유지법을 위반한 혐의로 기소되었다.
