More than 200 middle and high school English teachers are now qualified to teach English classes in English, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education last Thursday. One hundred twenty six elementary school teachers and 79 middle and high school teachers have become certified in Teaching English in English, a standard developed by the education office and the first of its kind in Korea. The certificates are awarded in two categories according to an applicant’s spoken English proficiency: M, which is higher, and A. Teachers who have taught for three years or more and have taken over 300 hours of training through the education office are eligible to apply for an A grade certificate, while the M grade certificate requires seven or more years of teaching experience and over 800 hours training. The certification is awarded based on teaching experience, performance in training courses provided by the office and scores on an exam that gauges speaking, writing, reading, listening and presentation skills. Teachers who obtain the certificate are provided with various benefits including free English language training overseas. The results of the tests will be made available to students and parents. “The teachers who pass the certification process are the ones who have made the most effort to improve their English proficiency and teaching skills through a variety of training courses,” a spokesman with the education office said. The certificates were awarded yesterday afternoon in a ceremony at the education office. |
